Life Insurance in Connecticut

Life insurance sized to your family, not to a sales quota

Most people who ask about life insurance want two things: to know how much they need, and to not get talked into something they do not understand. The Beam Agency writes term and permanent life insurance for families in the Farmington Valley and across Connecticut, compares carriers, and explains the difference in plain language.

How much do you actually need?

A quick way to get to a defensible number is to add up what your income would need to replace and what your debts would need to pay off:

  • Your mortgage balance and any other debt
  • Ten to fifteen years of the income your household depends on
  • College costs for each child, if that is a goal
  • Final expenses and a cushion for the first year

Then subtract savings and any coverage you already have through work. For a Farmington family with a $450,000 mortgage, two kids and one primary earner, that math often lands between $1 million and $1.5 million, which is far more than the one-times-salary policy most employers provide. Read our guide to how much life insurance a Connecticut family needs.

Term versus permanent

Term life

A fixed death benefit for a fixed period, usually 10, 20 or 30 years. It is the right answer for most families because it covers the years when someone depends on your income, and it costs a fraction of permanent coverage. A healthy 35-year-old can often buy $1 million of 20-year term for well under $100 a month.

Whole and universal life

Permanent coverage with a cash value component that grows tax-deferred. Useful for estate planning, business succession, special needs planning or people who want coverage that never expires. It is more expensive and more complicated, and it is not the right first policy for most households. We will tell you if it fits.

Why buy through an independent agent

Life insurance pricing depends heavily on the carrier’s underwriting view of your health, age and habits. One carrier may rate a well-controlled condition as preferred while another rates it standard, which can double the premium. Because we are not tied to one company, we can shop the application to the carrier most likely to treat your situation well.

What the application involves

Most term policies over a few hundred thousand dollars require a short paramedical exam, done at your home or office at your convenience, plus a phone interview about health history. Some carriers now offer accelerated underwriting with no exam for healthy applicants under a certain age and amount. From application to an issued policy is typically three to six weeks, and we handle the scheduling and follow-up with the carrier so you are not chasing paperwork. The premium is locked for the full term once issued, so the age you apply at matters more than the month.

Life insurance for business owners

If you own a business with a partner, a buy-sell agreement funded by life insurance keeps the business in the right hands. Key person coverage protects the company if the person it depends on dies. These are simple to put in place and very hard to fix after the fact. We can coordinate them with your business insurance.
