Business Insurance in Connecticut

Business insurance for Connecticut companies, shopped across multiple carriers

If you run a business in Connecticut, you probably need three or four policies working together, and the combination matters more than any single one. The Beam Agency is an independent agency in Farmington that writes commercial insurance for contractors, new businesses, restaurants, landlords and service firms across Hartford County. We compare quotes from multiple carriers, including Travelers and specialty markets, and we tell you which one actually fits.

We do not sell one carrier’s package. We look at what you do, what your contracts require, and where a claim would come from, then build the coverage around that.

What we offer

General liability insurance

Covers bodily injury, property damage and personal or advertising injury claims that come out of your operations, whether they happen on a job site, in your shop or at a client’s home. It is the policy every general contractor, landlord and commercial lease will ask you to prove you carry. Read what general liability actually covers.

Workers’ compensation

Connecticut requires workers’ compensation for essentially every employer with employees. It pays medical costs and lost wages when someone is hurt on the job and protects you from most injury lawsuits by employees. Premium is driven by payroll and class code, so getting your employees classified correctly is where most of the savings live.

Commercial auto

Any vehicle titled to the business, and often vehicles employees drive for work, needs a commercial auto policy. Personal auto policies are not written for business use, and most carriers will not cover a work van or a lettered truck once they know what it does, which is a bad thing to learn after an accident.

Business owner’s policy (BOP)

A BOP bundles general liability, commercial property and business interruption into one package. For a retail shop, an office or a small restaurant it is usually the most efficient starting point.

Professional liability (E&O)

If clients pay you for advice, design or a service, general liability does not cover a claim that your work cost them money. Consultants, bookkeepers, designers, IT firms and real estate professionals need errors and omissions coverage on top of GL.

Cyber liability

If you store customer data, take card payments or run your business through email, a cyber policy covers breach response, ransomware, funds-transfer fraud and the notification costs Connecticut law can require.

Commercial umbrella

Adds liability limits above your GL, auto and employer’s liability. Many general contractors and property managers now require subcontractors to carry $2 million or more in aggregate, and an umbrella is often the cheapest way to get there.

Bonds and certificates

We issue certificates of insurance, usually the same day, and place surety bonds for licensing, permits and contracts.

Who we work with

Contractors and trades

Electricians, plumbers, HVAC, painters, landscapers, roofers, remodelers and general contractors. GL, workers’ comp, tools and equipment, commercial auto and the certificates you need to get on site.

New businesses

Just filed an LLC and need your first policy for a lease, a client contract or a state license. We will tell you what you actually need now and what can wait.

Restaurants and food service

Property, liquor liability, spoilage, equipment breakdown and workers’ comp for kitchens.

How a quote works here

  1. You call, email or fill out the form. Tell us what the business does, roughly what it makes in revenue and payroll, and whether anyone is asking you for a certificate or specific limits.
  2. We pull the contract or lease language if there is one, because that dictates limits and additional insured wording more often than people expect.
  3. We quote it with the carriers that want your class of business. You get a comparison, not a single number.
  4. We bind it, issue certificates, and set a reminder to review it before renewal.

Most small business quotes come back within a few business days. Simple general liability policies for sole proprietors can often be bound the same day.

Why an independent agent in Farmington

The businesses we insure are in Farmington, Unionville, Avon, Simsbury, Canton, Bristol, Plainville, New Britain, West Hartford and Southington, and they call us because Brandon answers the phone. If a general contractor emails you on a Tuesday afternoon saying they need a certificate before you can start Wednesday, that is a phone call, not a support ticket. Common questions

How much does small business insurance cost in Connecticut?

It varies a lot with your industry, payroll and coverage needs, but many small Connecticut businesses pay a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars a year for a basic general liability policy or BOP. Trades with higher injury exposure and businesses with vehicles or employees pay more. The fastest way to a real number is a ten-minute conversation about what the business actually does.

Do I need workers’ comp if I have no employees in Connecticut?

Usually Connecticut does not require it if you have no employees. But if you are a sole proprietor working on job sites, many general contractors will still require a policy or a signed waiver before they hire you. We can help you figure out which applies.

What is the difference between general liability and professional liability?

General liability covers injuries, property damage and advertising claims arising from your operations. Professional liability, also called errors and omissions, covers claims that your advice or work caused a client financial harm. Businesses that provide a service or advice usually need both.

Can you insure a business outside Farmington?

Yes. We are licensed in Connecticut and write business anywhere in the state. Most of our commercial clients are in Hartford County.
